CEILINGS & WATER DAMAGE

Sagging or bulging ceiling: why you should keep clear

A ceiling that is sagging, bulging or visibly holding water can fail without much warning. Treat the area underneath it as unsafe until the cause is understood.

Understand it. Make it safe. Get it fixed.

POSolve gives practical first steps and a clear point to stop and call a professional.

1. Move people out of the area

Do not stand beneath the damaged section

Keep children, pets and occupants out of the room if the ceiling looks unstable, is dropping, cracking rapidly or holding water.

2. Look for the source from a safe position

Common causes include a roof leak, plumbing leak, leaking geyser or accumulated moisture. You can note where the staining starts and whether rain or plumbing use makes it worse, but do not enter a roof space or climb onto the roof to investigate.

3. Do not puncture the bulge

Puncturing a water-filled ceiling can trigger a larger collapse and may expose you to electrical wiring or contaminated water. Keep the area isolated instead.

4. Arrange the right help

A professional may need to stop the source of the water first and then assess the ceiling structure and any electrical fittings that were affected. If collapse is actively occurring or there is immediate danger, move away and call emergency services.
