1. Check for immediate danger
Leave the area and get help immediately
If water is reaching electrical fittings, there is smoke, sparking, a burning smell, a collapsing ceiling, or anyone is in immediate danger, keep people away. In South Africa, call 112 from a mobile for an emergency.
2. Safe first steps
- Keep people away from wet ceilings, light fittings and electrical points.
- If the electrical distribution board is dry, safely accessible and you know which breaker supplies the geyser, switch that circuit off. Do not approach a wet or unsafe board.
- If you can safely identify the geyser water-isolation valve without climbing into a roof space or approaching the leak, close it.
- Place containers or towels only where it is safe to do so. Do not stand beneath a sagging or water-filled ceiling.
3. Do not do this
- Do not open the geyser or remove covers.
- Do not work on wiring, thermostats, elements or pressure valves yourself unless you are appropriately qualified.
- Do not enter a wet roof space or climb onto a roof to inspect the leak.
- Do not puncture a bulging ceiling to release water.
4. When professional help is needed
A leaking geyser normally needs professional inspection. A technician may need to determine whether the issue is the geyser tank, a valve, pipework, overflow, tray or another component. If the leak has affected ceilings or electrical systems, additional trades may also be required.
